Just wanted to repost my post from the last thread...
At this point though a long term deal will start in the 6.5-7 million range now per year.
I don’t get this one year deal at all. They couldn’t do 4-5 years in the 5.75 million range?
How much value does he have on the trade market as a pure rental as he is a UFA next year |

Its just dumb all around. Unless Hayes didn't want to stay through the rebuild, but all reports were he wanted term. |

Very poor decision. Only way this isn’t bad is if both sides are working on a long term deal in the meantime. Maybe he wants 7+? |

Only thing that makes sense is they wanna see how Lias, Chytil and Howden look before making a long term contract with Hayes?
The thing that I don’t like the most is how does Hayes feel about this. I doubt he’d be happy about it at all |

Seems like a panicked decision by mngmnt - I was certain he was going to be locked in for 5x6 - Hope this works out for the Rangers. |

I will give him credit, by all accounts he seems like he wants to stay. But he's a soon to be 27 year old, middle 6 center. If the Rangers can get a 1st round pick for him in March, make the deal. |

So u would prefer to trade him for a 25+ pick rather than have him signed for 5 more years? |

Rangers had three more days to the arb hearing, why not wait and try and reach accord on a LT deal with Hayes rather than inking a one year deal today? How far apart were they, that’s what I want to know. His reported ask wasn’t that far fetched. Positive moves this offseason shot to smithereens |

As someone said recently, the Rangers could have the 1st overall pick, and take the 5th guy on the board. |

If he's signed for 5 more year and just stays as 45 point player, yeah. The Rangers got him for nothing. Acquiring a first round pick for him would be the definition of selling at the highest point. |

Its just dumb. You sign him through his prime, let him walk after that. He scores at the same clip as our vaunted #1 center all while trying to shut down the other teams best line. One of the top PK'ers. Yeah who the (frank) needs a responsible 2 way center who has been getting better every year. |

The Rangers don't have a #1 center.
But I get what you're saying. But Zib is already singed long term to a similar cap Hayes has now on 1 year deal. Hayes does get the tough match ups. But either he or Zib was gonna be moved. It's harder to move players with term. |

If he does get moved, I have a feeling this bites the Rangers in the ass big time. While I would love if all our young centers work out, odds are they don't. |

What was the point of a one year deal?? Should have just traded him if you don't want him!!! Personally you should have signed him to a 5.3M x 5 years!! His stats just get better and better. |

Hayes would have never gotten 7 plus he was asking 5.5 to 6 meaning to stay with the Rangers we could have gotten him for less than 5.5 and 5 years! WTF???? |

The one year deal makes no sense, the player will be unhappy all year, and the room will be also. |

It’s possible Hayes sees his future here is limited with Zib/Chytil/Andersson/Howden and rather than get traded somewhere a year or 2 into his deal he can just choose where he wants to go. |

Makes sense, and if true, why not trade him prior to signing him to a 1 year deal. |

Rangers can extend him after January 1st, or trade him before the deadline. Gives both sides more time and avoids arbitration. Sky isn’t falling. |

Not sure why so many here are upset. I would have preferred a 4 year contract myself, however, he still signed for upcoming season and DOUBLED his salary.
The advantage of signing him to only one year deal is that you avoid arbitration. The arbitration process can be very unsavory as each side tries to win with various stats. This is now avoided.
If Hayes has big first half, then you can renegotiate a longer term deal later during season. If another team makes Rangers an acceptable trade proposal, then you trade him.
You guys all seem to be exaggerating the down-side here...He is going to be here another year ----- lets enjoy watching him play and ( hopefully ) have a great season! |
